Many people are asking for light-colored oak cabinets, but Florence Livingston is also getting requests for darker ones.

A growing number of people are interested in character-rich quartzite and even granite. Designer Erika Morris believes the need for "newness" has peaked. Clients are looking for materials that feel more established, handmade, or true. The kitchen on the Oregon coast features a dramatic Taj Mohall quartzite countertop.

The Shaker cabinet style is given a "slim" update. This variation of the style has a flat centre panel and a square-edged border. It solves a design problem that has been around for a long time: how to make a modern kitchen with just the right amount of detail.
